How We Met
So James and I met in a very unconventional way. I was back at school for just one semester as I got ready to go back out on a service mission for my church. James had just gotten home from his service mission for our church and was starting his first semester ever of college. James was trying to find some options at this new school of people to date and downloaded a dating app called "Mutual". Conveniently, at the same time, I thought it would be funny to see what kind of guys existed on dating apps and so my friends and I all downloaded this dating app called "Mutual" and created funny profiles as a joke to see what would happen. In fact, my "bio" even said "interested to see who has the best pick up line"...
One day of mindless scrolling through the dating app, I landed on a profile of a guy I actually thought was really cute. With him, I didn't really want the app to be a joke because he was really cute! I swiped up on him and it said we "matched"! I was actually excited about this guy because he was SO cute! I didn't even want to wait for him to message me first so I messaged him "Hi!" He responded and we started talking for a few days and got to know each other just over messaging.
The F I R S T Date
After messaging for a while, James said "My cousin and I are planning a double date, would you like to come with me?" At this point, he hadn't even asked for my number so I made him ask for it and ask me over the phone instead of a dating app. Finally, I said yes and we planned for him to pick me up on a Friday night to go bowling.
The day of the date came and I was SO excited. I got a brand new shirt, did my hair really cute, spent a lot of time on make up and got really excited and nervous as I waited for him to come. The time came and he came to my door in a beanie, red flannel shirt, skinny jeans and a necklace around his neck. He looked a little different than his profile picture (much more mature!) but he was still super attractive! We start driving and I quickly realized that this boy in the car was NOT much of a conversationalist. I would ask him questions about his life and he would give me very vague answers and not ask anything about me. It got really awkward really quick. Finally, we got to the bowling alley and met up with his cousin and another girl. James and his cousin had this secret language they created called "Op" and spoke only in that language for the remainder of our time at the alley. He wouldn't talk to me the whole time and I was starting to think that he was disappointed when he met me! It just got really awkward and I was VERY ready to go home. After feeling super uncomfortable and disappointed through a full game of bowling, James's cousin said "Well, should we go to dinner?"
The date was going on FOREVER but I was getting hungry so I agreed. They ended up taking us girls to the mall food court and the cousin and the other girl went off somewhere leaving us alone to talk.... and it was just like the car ride! Mr. Delahunty could not hold a conversation to save his life! The atmosphere was so awkward and I was hoping he would end it soon!
But it didn't. No, James wanted to then go back to his apartment and WATCH A MOVIE! The whole time I was thinking "are you kidding me?? This is not going well! Why don't you just put us out of our misery!" But all four of us went back to James's apartment and he turned on the movie called "Hitch". Now for those of you who don't know anything about this movie, it's about a dating doctor that gives advice to men on how to date women. There was a specific line from the movie that I remember that pretty much said "If you take a girl to the door after a date and she plays with her keys then she wants to kiss you. If she just goes right inside then she is not interested". Which automatically puts all that pressure onto the end of the date! Anyways, we continue watching the movie and James sits nowhere near me. His cousin and the other girl were cuddling on one of the couches and James could not be bothered with me! I tried a last resort flirting technique to try to get his attention and said that I was cold and would love a blanket! He grabbed a monkey blanket and sat under one end of it and tossed me the other end. The technique did not work.. obviously. FINALLY, the movie ended and it was time for him to take me home. I already assumed he didn't like me at this point and just tried to stay quiet in the car. How awkward that this super cute guy thought I was so annoying that he wouldn't talk to me for a 5 hour date! We ended up getting lost on the way to my house so not only did I feel annoying, I now looked like an idiot that didn't know directions to her own house!
Finally, we got back to my house and we walked up the stairs to my door. The line from the movie kept playing in my head and I was trying to decide what to do with my keys! Is all lost? Should I not even try anything? Is this a last resort attempt to get his attention? What should I do? We got to the door, he gave me a hug, said bye, and before I could even pull my keys out, James had gone down the stairs and out to his car. What a date!
After I got inside I felt terrible. I felt annoying and all my efforts to look cute earlier in the night obviously did not work! However, he did pay for a meal and bowling so I felt like I should be polite and text him "Thank you for the date tonight". Not even 5 minutes after the text was sent, James quickly texted back and said "I had fun! Would you like to go on another date tomorrow?" I WAS SHOCKED.
The S E C O N D Date
I believe in second chances. However, at the time this second chance seemed like it would not be fun! James had asked me on a second date the next day after
Our First Valentine's Day
Okay so this is a little more of an interesting day and probably not a traditional Valentine's day! James and I weren't "officially" dating at this point. (Even though we had been spending literally every day together for a month...) Valentine's day started the night before actually! James and I were hanging out and decided we wanted to go out. So I went out the front door and there were flowers and a note on the door. I had no idea who it was from but the handwriting was so pretty so I said "Oh! Maybe my Relief society president gave these to me!" We then continued on our date. About 30 minutes into the date, my cute boy discloused to me that

Saying "I L O V E Y O U"
The night we first said "I love you" to each other it was so funny! My sweet James had such a hard time saying it and was so funny trying to get to that point! For a bit of a back story, I had messaged him first when we first met, I had asked him if we were official, I had done everything first! So when I knew he was wanting to say it, I was not going to finish that sentence for him and say it first! So here's the story:
We were in my car driving up the Provo canyon and holding hands. James squoze my hand three times and immediately after said "Do you know what that means?" The first thing that went through my mind was the line from Taylor Swift's New Year's Day song that says "You squeeze my hand three times in the back of the taxi"...Of COURSE I knew what that meant! I was NOT going to let him get off that easy! So I played dumb :) I said "No! Why don't you tell me what that means?" James got really quiet and then said something in the only other language he knows, Tongan. Now I do not speak Tongan, but again, I knew what he was trying to do. He pulled the car over and looked me in the eyes and said the Tongan phrase again. I love the man but I am not that dumb. So I pulled out my phone, pulled up a google translate page for Tongan, and had him type in the phrase (assuming once it popped up he would stop being stupid and just say it!). However, the translation came up as "my love moves towards you" AND HE STILL DIDN'T SAY IT!!! He just looked at me with a blank stare! So I played dumb a little longer and said "what would that mean..?" :) Oh my dear boy just kept playing dumb and it was getting brutal at that point! It took everything in me not to just say it and end the torture! However, I patiently waited and finally, with a shaky voice, James said "I love you". Gosh he is so cute.

Picking out the R I N G
After James met my family, we both knew that we were going to marry each other. I remember specifically that night we talked about it. We were driving and he pulled into a parking lot and got really serious. I asked him what was on his mind and he said "I want to marry you" and I knew that's exactly where I was at as well. From there, we decided to go look at rings so he could get ideas of what I like! These were probably my favorite dates of our whole relationship! We got to go from store to store and bond and think about our future together all while looking at shiny rings! Finally, we went to a store called Sierra West and we found THE ring! It was beautiful! It was nothing like what I thought I wanted but I loved it so much. James loved it just as much and we were just so excited for our future together!
